Red Light Camera Ticket

HOW IT WORKS

Red Light Traffic Safety Cameras (RLC) have been around a lot longer than you may think. RLC have been around for more than 20 years in New York. These tickets are treated similar to a parking ticket in that the ticket is written to the owner of the car and not the driver. Since the ticket is issued to the car, no points accrue to the car owner’s driver’s license and the tickets are returnable to Parking Violations Bureau or similar agency. Vehicle and Traffic Law §1111-b outlines the Red Light Camera law.

The tickets themselves are known as NOTICE OF LIABILITY is sent to the registered owner of the car. The ticket contains the date, time and location of the alleged violation, the camera ID number, the fine amount, and information on how to pay the fine or request a hearing. Pictures are also included on the notice.

The total fine for a red light camera ticket is $65, which includes a $15 Public Safety Fee. The total fine is due on or before 30 days after the ticket was issued. If the ticket is not pay on time, it becomes subject to a $25 late penalty fee.

SAFER ROADS?

The purpose of the RLC is safety, although the revenue paid to the City must have also been an attractive influence. But, have the cameras really made things safer? Check out the below Yonkers New York statistic published by lohud.com and judge for yourself:

Total crashes increased by 11 percent.

Right-angle crashes decreased by 15 percent.

Rear-end crashes increased by 83 percent.

Injury crashes went up by 29 percent.

There are always exceptions to the law, such as if a police officer waives you through an intersection when the traffic light is red. However, it seems that the red light cameras in Yonkers have not done much in the way of decreasing car crashes or making the roads a safer place.
